Types of Dental Crowns
What is a dental crown?
A dental crown
is also called a cap. It is a fixed prosthetic object that is cemented over the
tooth. The main objective of getting a dental crown is to cover the damaged
tooth, but at the same time, it strengthens the tooth and improves its overall
appearance and teeth alignment. These crowns are installed by a dentist, and
only a dentist can remove them.
Crowns are
made by taking the impression of the tooth or the teeth they are supposed to
cover. Before this impression is made, the dentist will reduce the tooth size
so that the crown fits perfectly.
What are the types of dental crowns?
Types of Dental crown
depend on the material from which the crown is made. The various types of
dental crowns are:
1.
Gold crowns
They are a
combination of copper and various other metals e.g., nickel or chromium. Gold
crowns are known for their strength and durability. They also last a long time
if proper care is taken. These crowns wear down very slowly, similarly to wearing
down of the natural enamel. Therefore, they are ideal for posterior tooth
restorations, especially the second molars. However, nowadays, gold crowns have
lost their popularity due to the aesthetics and colors of the same. Also, some
people have reported side effects such as allergic reactions or swelling due to
gold crowns.
2.
All Porcelain crown
These are one
of the most in-use dental crowns nowadays. They provide a natural look and
match the surrounding shape, size, and color of your teeth. They are considered
biocompatible, which means no metal is used. Therefore, they are entirely
toxic-free crowns. As a result, they are the best options for front teeth
restoration. However, there are certain disadvantages to these crowns, such as
they are not as strong as metal crowns, and they are costly as well.
3.
Porcelain fused to metal crowns (PFM)
Porcelain
fused to metal crowns is a widely used dental crown. They provide
strength as well as aesthetic. The metal structure gives them strength, and the
porcelain coat that covers the cap gives them proper aesthetics. These dental
crowns have been popular for about 50 years, and at the same time, they are
less costly than all-porcelain crowns. However, the main problem with these
crowns is that they leave a grey line on the gum line, which alters its
aesthetic look.
4.
Zirconia Crowns
They come in varieties of high translucent
zirconia and layered zirconia crowns. They are strong, long-lasting, provide
great aesthetic, less likely to wear off, less time consuming, and are biocompatible
as well. But solid zirconia is a bit difficult to adjust, and their strength
can make the teeth they bite against to wear off quite easily.
5. E-MAX: Lithium Disilicate crowns
They are the
newest types of dental crowns in the market. It is another type of all-ceramic
crown which is made out of lithium disilicate. They provide great aesthetics
and are very durable, as well. On the other hand, they could be quite
expensive.
These are the
five main types of dental crowns.
